There are numerous activities and groups running at the Sacred Heart Church.  We are always looking for people who would be willing to help out and get involved in the life of the parish!  If you would like to volunteer some of your time to one or more of the activities given below then please contact Deacon Philip either directly or via email or contact the lead given.  


Readers - required to read the First and Second readings and bidding prayers at weekend Masses. Scheduled on a rota basis.

Eucharistic Ministers - assist the priest with the distribution of the Holy Eucharist.  Parishioners are invited by Canon Denis to take part in training.  Scheduled on a rota basis.   

Drivers - provide transportation for parishioners who are unable to get to and from Mass.  Scheduled on a rota basis.

Altar servers - Boys and girls who have received their first holy communion are welcome to become altar servers to cover 9:00 and 11:00 am Masses in Flitwick.   Full training provided.  Scheduled on a rota basis.

Welcomers ‘meeters and greeters’ to welcome the congregation and to distribute missalettes, hymn books and newsletters.

Offertory and Retiring Collections - assist with church offertory collections and, on occasions, retiring collections.

After Mass Refreshments - Helpers prepare tea, coffee and biscuits for the congregation after 11am Mass.  

Child and Youth Activities

Baptism Preparation - Prepare parents for baptism of young children.  Two session courses  run quarterly on Saturday.

Little’uns - Social gathering for Mums (or Dads and grandparents) and pre-school children – play, singing, prayers, refreshments.  Run on Fridays  10.15 am–11.45 am in term time. Age group 0 - 4 years.

Children’s Liturgy - Encourage children to think about the theme of the Gospel in a separate session during Mass ; simpler version of the Gospel followed by colouring/drawing. Run on Sundays during 9am Mass (homily) in term times. Age group 4 - 8 years.

Pre-Communion - Teach the children simple prayers and about important people in the Bible
Encourage children to feel at home in the Church by learning about key equipment/layout of Church. Run on Sundays 9.45am to 10.30am weekly  in term time in conjunction with First Holy Communion timetable. Age group 5 - 7 years.

First Holy Communion preparation - Prepare candidates for sacraments of Reconciliation and Holy Communion. Run on Sundays 9.45am to 10.30am weekly in term time; programme starts after October half term.  Age group 7+ (year 3+).

Post-Communion - Encourage children to continue faith development between sacraments. Run on Sundays 9.45am to 10.30am fortnightly (alternate weeks to Pre-comm?) in term time in conjunction with First Holy Communion timetable. Age group 8+ (year 4+).

Confirmation - Prepare candidates for sacrament.  Course run every 2 years.  Age group 12+ (year 8+).


Music -  the church is always looking for talented people who can play musical instruments, especially the organ.

Singing - the church is always looking for talented singers to join the church choir, “The Sacred Heart Singers”.

Parish Groups

St Vincent de Paul Society (SVP) - aims to reach out to those in need in our own parish and in the wider world.  The group meets every Monday evening at the church.

Parish Management Group (PMG) - assist Canon Denis in administration and organisational duties as well as co-ordinating and directing other church groups.

Faith Development –the RCIA Group (Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults) is for those who wish to learn more about the Christian faith with Catholic traditions.  Contact Deacon Philip Pugh for details.

Mother’s Prayers Group - Our Mothers' Prayers Group has been running for 10 years in our parish.  We meet  fortnightly in the intimacy of a parishioner's home have a cup of tea and fellowship after which we praise God and pray for our children, grandchildren, anyone who has asked for prayer or who is in our heart.  We have had some wonderful answers to our prayers through the years and The Mothers' Prayers movement from small beginnings is now in over 90 different countries throughout the world.  

Charismatic Prayer Group - Meet for a time of informal praise and worship, intercession and prayer ministry.


Church cleaning - a group of volunteers who clean the church.   Scheduled on a rota basis.

Property management - the Property group undertakes minor day to day maintenance activities for the church and liaises with the diocese on property related matters.  In addition, they undertake fire safety assessments.
